When the Days Get Shorter: BrainCore Neurofeedback and Depression

Sep 22, 2026

Fall officially arrives this week, and for most people that's good news. Cooler air, color on the mountains, football and fairs and the holidays coming into view. But there's a group of folks who feel something else start to settle in about now, and they don't always have a name for it. The light goes earlier every evening. Getting out of bed takes more than it should. Things that used to be enjoyable feel flat. It's harder to concentrate, harder to care, and easier to just stay on the couch. Some people know exactly what it is because they've been through it before. Others just think they're tired, or lazy, or getting old.

If any of that sounds familiar, you're not imagining it, and you're not weak. Depression is one of the most common health conditions there is, and for a lot of people it has a seasonal rhythm that shows up right as the days shorten.

Here's what we want you to understand: depression shows up in measurable ways in how the brain is regulating itself. Regulation is something that can be seen on a brain map, and it is something that can be trained.

Please note: On Thursday, September 24 we will close at 10:30am and reopen at 3:30pm. On Friday, September 25 we will close at 10:30am for the day. Please plan your visits accordingly. We appreciate your understanding.

When the Days Get Shorter: BrainCore Neurofeedback and Depression

Depression wears a lot of faces. For some people it's sadness. For others it's numbness, irritability, exhaustion, trouble sleeping (or sleeping far too much), a loss of interest in things they used to love, or a mind that just can't get going. It affects teenagers, working adults, new mothers, and retirees. And it's often tangled up with other things we see every day at BrainCore: anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, chronic pain.

Research using quantitative EEG has found recognizable patterns in many people with depression. One of the most consistent is an imbalance between the left and right frontal regions of the brain. The left side, associated with approach, motivation, and positive engagement, tends to be under-active relative to the right. Other common findings include excess slow-wave activity and patterns that overlap with anxiety and poor sleep. In plain terms, the part of the brain that's supposed to say "let's go" is running quiet. Neurofeedback trains those patterns directly.

Important: Please start with your physician. Depression should be evaluated and managed by a qualified medical or mental health provider, and several other conditions can look very much like it: thyroid problems, anemia, vitamin deficiencies, sleep apnea, medication side effects, and the aftereffects of a concussion among them. Each is managed differently, and some are very treatable once identified. If you are taking an antidepressant or any other prescription, do not change or stop it on your own. That decision belongs to you and your prescriber. BrainCore Neurofeedback is complementary care that works alongside your provider's treatment, never a replacement for it, and never a replacement for counseling or therapy that's helping you.

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, or you're worried about someone who is, please call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, right now. It's free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

One more thing worth saying plainly: needing help with depression is not a character flaw, a lack of faith, or a failure to try hard enough. It's a health condition with a biology behind it, and the people who do best are usually the ones who stop trying to white-knuckle it alone.

What Is BrainCore Neurofeedback?

BrainCore Neurofeedback is a brainwave training program that uses real-time feedback to teach the brain how to regulate itself. It begins with a quantitative EEG brain map, a painless measurement of brainwave activity across the scalp that shows exactly where your patterns sit relative to what's typical. That map is what makes this specific. It turns "I just feel off" into visible information about which patterns are out of balance and where.

From there, a training protocol is built for that individual brain. During a session, sensors are placed on the scalp and read brainwave activity while you watch a video or listen to music. When the brain produces a healthier pattern, the video plays clearly and the reward continues; when it drifts back into the old pattern, the feedback dims. The sensors only read. Nothing is sent into the head. The brain, which is very good at chasing a reward, gradually learns to hold the better pattern on its own. It's learning, the same way riding a bike is learning. No medication, no needles, and nothing painful about it. Most people find the sessions calm and even restful.

How BrainCore Neurofeedback Supports People With Depression

  1. It Starts With a Map. The qEEG shows the specific pattern your brain is running, so training targets that pattern.
  2. It Addresses Frontal Imbalance. Training works directly on the under-active left-frontal pattern so often associated with low mood and low motivation.
  3. It Supports Motivation and Engagement. Getting started is one of the hardest parts of depression. On the day, on a task, on anything. Training supports the shift into gear.
  4. It Supports Better Sleep. Depression and poor sleep feed each other. Improved regulation often improves sleep, and that gain compounds into everything else.
  5. It Supports Clearer Thinking. The fog, the slow processing, the trouble concentrating. These are regulation patterns that tend to improve as the brain steadies.
  6. It Supports a Calmer Stress Response. Anxiety and depression very often travel together, and both come from a nervous system that is struggling to regulate.
  7. It Supports Emotional Steadiness. Fewer of the sudden dips, less of the irritability, more of a feeling of being on level ground.
  8. It Works Alongside Your Other Care. Neurofeedback complements medication, counseling, exercise, and the other things your provider recommends.
  9. It Builds a Skill. There is nothing to take daily and no tolerance to build. The brain is learning something.
  10. It Aims for Lasting Change. Because the brain is learning a pattern of its own, the aim is for the gains to hold after training ends. Individual results vary.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Drug-Free: No medication involved.
  • Non-Invasive: The sensors read activity. Nothing is sent into the brain.
  • Objective Starting Point: A brain map gives you real data about your own brain.
  • Individualized: Every protocol is built from that individual map.
  • All Ages: Teens, adults, and seniors.
  • Works Alongside Medical Care: Complements the care your physician and counselor are already providing.

If the shorter days have you feeling like you're sinking, a brain map is a simple, painless place to start. It will give you something concrete to work from, whatever else you and your provider decide to do. Contact our office to schedule one.

You Don't Have to Wait for Spring

A lot of people who struggle every fall and winter have simply learned to brace for it. They count the weeks until the light comes back and try to hold on. We'd like to offer a different plan: find out what your brain is actually doing, and give it the chance to learn a better pattern before the darkest part of the year gets here.

A brain map takes about an hour, doesn't hurt, and it's a good first step you can take alongside everything else that's helping.

Give us a call at 423.542.3337 or text us at 423.380.0877 to get scheduled. We'd be honored to help.
